During the Battle of the Borders on 22 and 23 August 1914, bloody battles took place in Maissin between the French and German armies. There are many reminders of this in the village: the stained glass windows in the church depict war scenes and in the portal you will find a piece of beech where a soldier has carved his name and date with his bayonet.
Several streets are named after military figures. In addition to several war memorials, there is also a military cemetery just outside the centre.
