The town of Unterammergau was first mentioned in documents in 1280 as "Nidernambergewe" and until 1803 belonged to the Hofmark Oberammergau, which was part of the Murnau court of the Ettal monastery. The town achieved ecclesiastical independence from Oberammergau in 1809.
