The Schönower Heide, located on the northwestern border of the village of Schönow (since 2003 a district of the city of Bernau near Berlin), is a 533-hectare nature reserve owned by the city of Berlin in Brandenburg.
The area, which was used as a military training ground from the beginning of the 20th century until 1991, received protection status in 2000.
Since then, the Schönower Heide has also been designated as a European fauna-flora habitat. In addition to an open heath landscape with extensive areas of common heather, there are other biotopes worthy of protection in the nature reserve, including sandy grasslands and inland dunes as well as the wet meadows of a reed pond.
In 2009, fallow, mouflon and red deer were released in a fenced area of around 140 hectares, which makes a significant contribution to keeping the heathland open.
