The bridge serves as one of the entrances to the French Garden. Celle's city fortifications were a system of defensive structures that protected the city of Celle from attack since the Middle Ages. These included the city wall with city gates, as well as ramparts and moats. Celle Castle, also fortified, was located directly adjacent to the city. The city fortifications were expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries and, after the Seven Years' War, were demolished starting in 1766.** Visible remnants of the fortifications still exist today, including waterways (the city moat) and a fragment of the city wall.

** Demolition usually refers to the demolition of castles or fortifications by the losing side in a military conflict. It is carried out by dismantling, leveling, blasting, or tearing down. Only rarely is the structure completely destroyed.
