Great Asby is a village about 5 miles (9 km) south of Appleby in the Eden district of Cumbria, England. It is part of the civil parish of Asby. The name comes from the Old Norse askr (as) and by (farm). The village church dedicated to Peter dates from 1863-66 and stands on a spot where a church must have stood since around 1160.
St. Helen's spring is famous for its healing properties. Until 1940, this source was the village's main water supply. Even in times of drought the spring never dried up. The area around the well was cleared and improved by villagers in 2008. The blue plate with the text in the local dialect and English testifies to this.
