Road cycling

This is a very old wooden covered bridge which also has the musty smell of history when passing through it. The bridge was first built in 1247 and destroyed several times in war and floods. The current structure was built near 1805 and once again renewed do due decay in 1954.
From a cycling perspective, either side of the bridge has a steep climb to overcome when passing through. It offers a good view of the Rhine and nice photo opportunities to go a long with it.

The old customs bridge over the Rhine between Altenburg and Rheinau is not only impressive for its historic ambiance. On the pier of the Swiss-side approach bridge stands a modern bronze sculpture of the bridge's patron saint, Saint Nepomuk, erected by Emilio Stanzani. It replaces a sandstone statue that stood there until 1872.
