Basalt areas are a typical feature of the Rhön and Kuppenrhön. Basalt stone comes from volcanoes and is an effusive rock. The cooled lava consists of a mixture of calcium, iron and magnesium silicates with feldspar. Mostly also some olivine is included. At many places in the Rhön proper Basaltsteinmeere emerged, as here on the Baier or for example on the Geißköpfchen on the Dietrichsberg at Völkershausen, where also several meters high basalt columns were created.
