The municipality of Heuvelland is located in a relief region called the West Flemish Heuvelland. The highest hill in the municipality is the Kemmelberg (156 m); then follow the Vidaigneberg (136 m), the Rodeberg (129 m), the Scherpenberg (125 m) and a lower hill (82 m) on which Wijtschate is located (Helling van Wijtschate). The Zwarteberg is still on the border with France. These hills are part of a larger hilly landscape that also includes the Houtland of the French Westhoek. These hills are especially important for cycling tourism and some competitions.

Originally this was a wooded area. Many centuries of arable farming but also heavy fighting in the First World War completely changed the view, so that only the hilltops are now covered with trees; especially with oak, beech and sweet chestnut. A policy of reforestation is being pursued, whereby the remaining forests are again expanded and possibly contiguous.

The Provincial Domain Kemmelberg is freely accessible thanks to a number of hiking trails. Certain parts of the forest are closed to the public to allow the vegetation to develop. The Flemish Community manages the Hellegatbos on the Rodeberg. The Hellegatbos is a typical spring forest, a place that has not been cultivated and has been entrusted to nature due to the swampy, swampy soil, crossed by many streams. In spring the bluebells color the slopes of the hills purple. Spring bushes are created by spring water that bubbles up above a clay layer on the surface.
