Until 1928 the name was "Algua di Costa Serina" from 1928 it became "Bracca di Costa Serina".
Since 1948 the municipalities of Bracca and Costa Serina have been reconstituted, while the two former municipalities of Frerola and Rigosa remained united under the name of "Municipality of Algua".
Algua includes the hamlets Pagliaro, Frerola, Sambusita and Rigosa.

According to recent studies, the origin of the name seems to derive from water, an element of which the area is very rich, given that there are innumerable springs and small streams in the area.
The Municipality of Algua is located at an average altitude of 432 m a.s.l. and has 752 inhabitants.

the A and the gush of water refer to the origin of the name, where "algua" "would mean" water "and would indicate how the area is rich in natural springs.
The beech trunk with the olive branch recalls the local Sanctuary of the Madonna del Perello.
In that place an image of the Madonna is venerated that recalls the apparition to a local farmer, who convinced his fellow citizens of the event by showing the flowering of an olive tree bud on a dry beech branch.
