Today's Flemhuder See is the remainder of a much larger body of water that existed until the construction of the Kiel Canal. Today the lake is a paradise for waterfowl and this part, separated from the north and the connection to the channel, slowly sands and provides huge reeds for breeding. A true access to the lake does not exist, but an excellent observation station and a place with a lot of overview.
