The Protestant theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern founded his so-called rescue houses for children and young people in Hamburg and Berlin during the industrial revolution in the 19th century.
With its red clinker brick buildings located around the church, the Johannesstift looks like a small village in its own right: with a grocery and book store, a hairdressing salon, a restaurant and a gardening center.

The collegiate church is the landmark of the Protestant Johannesstift and forms the spiritual center of diaconal work. The red brick church was inaugurated in 1910 and has architectural elements of medieval Brandenburg church building, the late Renaissance, but also Art Nouveau elements of the 20th century. The tower is 56 m high.

Spacious, quiet and very well-kept complex with buildings from different eras. It is worth taking a tour of the grounds and a subsequent visit to the hotel's café.
