Embark on a challenging hike to the summit of Corno Occidentale, starting with a gentle forest path before transitioning into a steep, rocky ascent. This difficult route covers 6.1 miles (9.8 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 2663 feet (812 metres), typically taking around 4 hours and 42 minutes to complete. As you climb, you will pass through charming Alpe areas and encounter the adventurous Ferrata del Venticinquennale CAI, equipped with chains and cables. From the summit, you can expect panoramic vistas of Lake Como, the snow-capped San Primo, and other prominent peaks. The experience of being on this trail is one of continuous ascent, rewarded by expansive views.
The starting point for this trail is at Fonti di Gajum, where parking is available. Be aware that parking can fill up quickly, especially if you plan your hike on a weekend. It is important to note that the route is not recommended after rain or in very humid conditions. Slippery stones and poor visibility at higher altitudes can make the exposed sections particularly hazardous, so check the weather forecast before you go.
This trail is located within the Riserva Naturale Sasso Malascarpa, a protected area known for its natural beauty. The presence of the Ferrata del Venticinquennale CAI adds an adventurous element, distinguishing it from many other hikes in the region. The panoramic views from the Corno Occidentale summit are a major draw, providing a memorable reward for your effort.
