The city of Klaipeda, formerly Memel, is located in the Baltic States and is the third largest city in the country after Vilnius and Kaunas. It is located in western Lithuania, at the mouth of the Dane (Dange) in the Curonian Lagoon. The area of the Curonian Spit extends to the south of the port city. Klaipeda is Lithuania's gateway to the world. The cosmopolitan port city has by far the most important seaport in the country, which is considered an important hub for cargo and passenger ships between Lithuania, Germany and Scandinavia. The Dane flows west through the city center and divides Klaipeda in two – to the south of the river lies the Old Town with many shops, restaurants and a few hotels, to the north lies the New Town with the railway station and the University of Klaipeda. The pretty old town, which was declared a cultural monument in 1969, is reminiscent of times long past with its narrow cobbled streets and remains of the old Memelburg. The heart of the historic city center of Klaipeda with its strictly rectangular street grid is the Theater Square with the theater from 1857. In front of it a fountain with the figure of "Ännchen von Tharau" adorns the square, which evokes the song of the same name by the German poet Simon Dach (1605 - 1659) remembered. If you turn into the narrow streets of the old town of Klaipeda from Theater Square, you will see many restored half-timbered houses and large warehouses. They are reminiscent of Klaipeda's function as a

Port and commercial center. The half-timbered buildings in Klaipeda are among the northernmost in Europe.
