    Úhošť

    mountain in the Czech Republic

Úhošť (German Burberg) is a 593.3 m n.m. high mountain in the Doupovské hory in Czech Republic. Because of its steppe vegetation and the special geological structure, the mountain was declared a national nature reserve (národní přírodní rezervace) in 1974. The Úhošť rises on the north-east flank of the Doupov Mountains at the scenic transition to the North Bohemian Basin. To the north at the foot of the hill on the river Ohře (Eger) lies the old royal town of Kadaň (Kaaden), to the west is the town of Klášterec (Klösterle). The small towns of Úhošťany (Atschau), Kadaňská Jeseň (Gösen), Zásada (Sosau), Pokutice (Pokatitz) and Brodce (Prödlas), which belong to the town of Kadaň, are located directly on the flanks of the mountain. The settlement Úhošť (Burberg), which used to be on the summit plateau, has died out.

The Burberg near Kaaden is one of the most impressive places in Bohemia - if not in Central Europe. The mighty Table Mountain falls steeply on all sides and, as the eastern foothills of the Doupau Mountains, lies like a sentinel over the North Bohemian Basin. The mountain has been populated for at least 7500 years. It is perfect for this because farming is possible here on several plateaus and there are also two non-drying ponds. Until 1945, a small settlement was still inhabited by German-speaking residents. With the distribution after the Second World War, this Burberg settlement then fell into disrepair, as a military restricted area was set up here.

The Eger meanders directly below, rushing towards the Bohemian Uplands to merge with the Elbe near Leitmeritz. And it comes to the mind of the hiker, as it says in the well-known Podersam folk song:

When the boy came to Eger:
"Eger, speak, where are you rushing to?"
"To the Elbe" it murmurs briskly,
"I must move to the Elbe!".
