With a very simple layout, it is the work of Miguel Ferro Caaveiro, revised by Ventura Rodríguez and completed in 1784. The works were financed with the alms of the devotees of the souls in purgatory. On the neoclassical façade, giant order Ionic columns support a large pediment. In the center there is a sculpture with the souls burning in the fire of purgatory and, at the top, two angels adoring the cross. The nave has a hall floor plan with chapels on the sides. Inside, the altarpieces by Prado Mariño stand out.

The construction of the chapel of the General Brotherhood of Souls, in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela, began on April 8, 1784, with plans by the architect Miguel Ferro Caaveiro and construction management by the master builder Juan López Freire. The consecration of the new temple, placed under the invocation of the Holy Christ of Mercy, was celebrated on August 31, 1788.

In 2015, in the approval by Unesco of the extension of the Camino de Santiago in Spain to «Caminos de Santiago de Compostela: Camino Francés y Caminos del Norte de España», Spain sent as documentation a «Retrospective Inventory - Associated Elements» (Retrospective Inventory - Associated Components) in which the Ánimas chapel appears at number 932.
