Saint Suliau, the eldest son of a 6th-century King of Wales, renounced his right to the throne and founded a monastery on the banks of the Rance around 560. Legend has it that the saint allowed the sea to flow into the valley to prevent the donkeys of the villagers across the street from crossing the road to feast on the grapes in the monastery garden. He was also credited with disarming an evil snake, which he hurled down Mont Garrot. The atmospheric fishing village, named after him, bears the label 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France'. In the winding streets, which are dominated by the massive church tower, there are still many old granite houses.
