The approximately 35.4 hectare nature reserve is registered under number 74 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was designated in 1968 (date of ordinance: 14 October 1968). The nature reserve is part of the FFH area "Osterautal". It borders in the north on the landscape conservation area "Bad Bramstedt (Bramerau-Osterau, Schmalfelder Au, Hohes Moor)". The district of Segeberg is responsible for the lower nature conservation authority.

The nature reserve is located roughly between Neumünster, Bad Bramstedt and Bad Segeberg on the edge of the Osterau lowlands. It protects a remainder of the drained and peated Stellbrookmoor, a raised bog that used to form a scenic unit characterized by moors and heathland with the Hasenmoor and Langlohmoor to the south-west as well as the Halloher and Holmer Moor. The area is characterized by open areas and wooded areas at the edges. It is to be developed with adjacent areas on the Osterau to form a network of nature-determined areas.

The nature reserve borders on roads and paths to the north, west and east. To the north and east are wooded areas, to the south and west agricultural areas. The area drains to the Osterau.
