The 142-hectare NSG "Liebenauer Gruben" comprises a complex of predominantly contiguous pond waters, which originated from sand and gravel quarrying. The "Liebenauer pits" serve as a habitat for endangered species such as osprey, corncrake and white stork. In addition, the largely self-dynamic development of the area should be made possible towards a natural meadow landscape.
The area is part of the large-scale FFH area 289 "pond batwaters in the Nienburg area".
Responsible is the district of Nienburg as the lower nature conservation authority.
