Tips

  • Cathedral of Maria Santissima di Romania, Tropea
Tropea Cathedral is a former bishop's church in Tropea built by the Normans
In the baroque period the church was baroque styled. After the cathedral was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1905, it underwent major restorations between 1927 and 1931. The original appearance was reconstructed and the baroque stylistic elements were removed. The main altar is decorated with an image of Maria von Romania, who is said to have spared Tropea from the effects of a severe earthquake in 1638. Beneath the altar are relics of the holy martyr Dominica, the patron saint of Tropea, in a golden urn. In a side chapel, the two meter high Black Crucifix from the 15th century is on display. A Staufer arcade from the 13th century connects the cathedral with the neighboring bishop's palace, which today houses the diocesan museum.
