The Hochgrat chain extends in the western part of the Allgäu Alps, west of the Iller Valley, where the German towns of Sonthofen and Immenstadt are located. Between them lies Blaichach, from where the chain stretches approximately 20 km in a west-southwest direction to Hittisau in Austria. The German-Austrian border runs along the mountain ridge at the saddle between Hohenfluhalpkopf and Hochhäderich.
