The Erfurt Cathedral (formerly also called Marienkirche or Propsteikirche Beatae Mariae Virginis) is the most important and oldest church building in Erfurt. It is 81.26 m high [1] and, with the Gloriosa, has the largest free-swinging bell in the world from the Middle Ages. The cathedral only served as a bishopric for a short time in the middle of the 8th century and was the seat of the collegiate monastery of St. Mary throughout the Middle Ages until the early 19th century. Since 1994 it has been the cathedral of the newly created diocese of Erfurt and the seat of the cathedral chapter.
