The St. Petri church in its Gothic brick construction, as we see it today, was built in the 13th, 14th and early 15th centuries. In the time before that (12th/early 13th century) there was a simpler building, probably made of wood, but on a very solid fieldstone foundation. Even today, when excavating on the church square, you come across countless boulders of various sizes. In former times the place where the church stands was called Burgberg. This designation and the many stones suggest that the "predecessor church" was built on the remains of a castle.
