The church was built according to the scheme with a "Croce Commissa" plan, a particular type of cross in which the crosspiece is placed at the top of the vertical part, whose shape recalls the letter T.

With the monastic order suppressed by Napoleonic decree in 1797, the church, a subsidiary complex of the Ospedale Maggiore, was used as a mental hospital between 1832 and 1892.
It was subsequently sold to private individuals in 1923.
