When mining lignite in the Catja pit was no longer worthwhile, the Helene pit was opened up and some of the overburden was transported to the Catja pit with an overburden track over the approximately 1 km long breakthrough ("Congo") into the Catja pit. As a result, the Catja pit shrank so much that today's Katja Lake is only about 1/3 of the original area of the Catja pit. Coal mining was abandoned on March 27, 1958 due to the increasingly difficult water management of the groundwater.
The Katjasee is the abandoned pit Catja, which was formed together with the pit Helene by inflowing groundwater.
Only 7 years later, in 1965, the present water level of the Katja and Helene lakes was reached.
The Katjasee is 67 m deep.
