Built on the ashes of the ancient church of Santa Maria di Sudorno, the building was built starting from 21 March 1915, to create a new place of worship.

Italy's entry into the war a few weeks later prompted the promoters of the initiative to dedicate the place of worship to fallen soldiers for their homeland, a decision that was confirmed at the consecration ceremony on 6 August 1916.

The designer Engineer Camillo Galizzi, followed the Lombard style for the exterior, visible in the presence of the central rose window and the medieval arches.

The internal part is instead characterized by the 140 commemorative plaques of the numerous Bergamo citizens who disappeared during the two conflicts.

The tomb of General Giovanni Marieni is kept inside the Votive Temple.

Also preserved is the altarpiece attributed to Aeneas Salmeggia and depicting Jesus in the company of Mary and Saint Anne.
