St. Elisabeth in Silberhöhe-Beesen - history and architecture

The origin of the St. Elisabeth Church dates back to 1150 in the form of a chapel at the western end of the settlement of Beesen (Bizeme). [STOPP]As early as 1184, ownership of the chapel was transferred to the newly founded Moritz monastery, with Beesen being mentioned for the first time in the associated transfer ownership document.

Inserted into the old fishing settlement in Beesen is the archetypal Romanesque church, which was rebuilt in 1724-1725 after ownership of the estate was transferred to the Theological Faculty of Halle. In the years 1743 to 1744, an octagonal west tower with a dome and lantern was added, and later in 1791 the sacristy on the east side of the building.

The upper horseshoe gallery was also built in 1791, with the lower gallery and all the parapet areas being painted with scenes from the biblical story, probably by Jeremias Hoffmann. The pictures show the life of Jesus with his life, healing and suffering phases of this historical epoch.

Restored both inside and out during the years 1980-1988.

The huge pulpit altar is very impressive due to its high structure. It encloses the late Gothic winged altar built under Cardinal Albrecht in 1522 and the originally free-standing pulpit. As a predella, J.A. Reinwaldt the panel painting dated 1745 with the motif of the evening meal. The reliefs of three evangelists are shown on the pulpit basket.

Johann Christian Trothe created the pulpit and the sound cover, artistically decorated with tablets of the law and surrounded by lightning or clouds, the wooden baptism and the organ prospectus in 1725. The late Gothic carvings from 1522 are impressive in the side shrine and in the predella.

The life-size crucifix (ca. 1520) and underneath the mourning Mary also come from the same period.
