Hiking Highlight
On the Schafberg there is usually a lot of hustle and bustle due to the cog railway.
If you want to climb up on foot and are not so mountainous or sure-footed, you should climb up via the south side.
A challenging and varied trail leads along the north side, which is also secured with wire ropes in the upper part.

Wonderful view from the Hotel Schafberg on the Wolfgangsee and the surrounding mountains and lakes

Here at the Schafberghotel you have an impressive view over the Wolfgangsee to the entire southern mountain peaks such as Dachstein, Sparber, Bleckwand, Gamsfeld, the entire Osterhorn Group, the Tennen and Hagen Mountains, the high Göll over the Watzmann and Untersberg to the Hochstaufen.

As an alternative to the ascent with the cogwheel train (not exactly cheap, but still worth seeing), the "per pedes" option is worthwhile - there are a few options here, be it on the front side, i.e. the side facing the WOLFGANGSEE, or on the back with a fantastic Finish to the HIMMELSPFORTE (quite steep & partly insured).
