Meiduinen
The Meiduinen nature reserve near Ossendrecht has a turbulent past. The nature reserve used to consist of sand dunes with forest. These were excavated in the 1980s for the extraction of sand and clay from the Groeve Boudewijn. The relic of the excavation and steep edge of the Brabantse Wal is still clearly visible. Clean groundwater seeps from the steep edge and forms stream channels to wet spots. Special plants such as swamp clubmoss germinate in these wet places. Peat mosses provide the first impetus for the restoration of the vanished peat landscape of West Brabant. In the coming period, Natuurmonumenten will focus on restoring, protecting and experiencing this special area.
