The Untertorbrücke is the oldest bridge in the city of Bern over the Aare and one of the oldest 🪨 stone bridges in Switzerland 🇨🇭 It was the only Aare bridge in Bern until the 19th century. A temporary wooden footbridge may have existed nearby as early as Gallo-Roman times. The first Untertorbrücke - a wooden yoke bridge - was completed in 1256. A flood washed it away in 1460. Construction of the current bridge began the following year. Construction took 26 years and was completed in 1487. Over time, the bridge was restored several times. After the Nydeggbrücke was opened in 1844, traffic over the Untertorbrücke decreased significantly. Source: wikipedia
