The ringing originally consisted of two bells. In 1917 the larger of the two bronze bells was confiscated for war purposes.

In 1923, after a dramatic race against inflation, then Pastor Ocker ordered two new steel bells for 1,143,000 marks, which were consecrated and installed on March 23, 1924. The remaining small bronze bell was sold to finance the new steel bells. Inscriptions were omitted due to lack of funds.

In 1959, the Lutheran congregation donated a new bronze bell to mark the 100th anniversary. It was consecrated on October 23, 1959. Two more bronze bells were dedicated at the community's 150th anniversary celebrations in 2009. The steel bells had deep rust holes and had to be replaced. About €65,000 had to be raised for the bells and the construction work. The Nikolaikirche Papenburg e.V

The bells of the Nikolaikirche originally consisted of two bells. In 1917 the larger of the two bronze bells was confiscated for war purposes. In 1923, then Pastor Ocker ordered two new steel bells, which were dedicated and installed on March 23, 1924. The remaining small bronze bell was sold to finance the new steel bells. Individual inscriptions were dispensed with due to lack of funds. In 1959, the Lutheran congregation donated a new bronze bell to mark the 100th anniversary. It was consecrated on October 23, 1959.

At the 150th anniversary celebrations in 2009, two more bronze bells were dedicated; the steel bells had deep rust holes and had to be replaced. You are now standing next to the church in a small green area.
