The narrow bike and footpath is protected by crash barriers, it is better to drive on the hard shoulder. However, there is a lot going on during the season and you are guaranteed to be honked at more often if you drive on the hard shoulder instead of on the Readweg.

It's very loud on the bridge, not nice to drive and the incline isn't really a challenge (there are better ones in the area, such as from Lütjenbrode to Bäderstraße up where the big tower goes), the view from the bridge makes up for it but something. And if you want to go to Fehmarn, there is no alternative route if you don't come via Denmark and ferry ;)
