Tips

  • Bagnara Calabra
Bagnara Calabra lies at the end of a splendid bay, surrounded by wonderfully green hills that plunge into the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and has been lapped by the waters of the Strait of Messina since ancient times. Historical hypotheses place Bagnara and the nearby Palmi as the seat of the archaic Portus Orestis, where the Phoenicians settled as early as the 7th century BC. Chr. operated their brisk seafaring trade. However, valid evidence of the existence of the village does not exist until 1085, when Count Roger D'Altavilla ordered the construction of the Nullius Abbey of Santa Maria V.G. and the XII. apostle ordered. Since then, the city has experienced changing political events and has been repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes (most notably in 1783 and 1908), but always rebuilt in the same place. Today Bagnara is one of the most popular resorts on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast of Reggio, known for its vitality and cuisine, where swordfish is the undisputed king.
