Rode Castle is the landmark of Herzogenrath. It was first mentioned in 1104 as "castrum Rodense" in the Annales Rodenses. The priest Ailbertus von Antoing, a canon from Tournai in Belgium, asked the then lord of Rode Castle, Adelbert von Saffenberg, for land to found a monastery. Rode Abbey, today's Rolduc Abbey, was built not far from the castle.
