    Island with discovery potential

The previous owner of this island and its mansion was none other than Georg Wertheim, who bought the castle in 1911 as a gift for his wife Ursula. The estate in Sassleben was a rural idyll straight out of a picture book. The apples from the orchards were of such outstanding quality that they made their way to the important department store in Berlin; guests were regularly welcomed to summer festivals in the manor house. The square Love Island with sphinxes and fountains had a boat dock to which you could comfortably gondola and the cast-iron pavilion, which we later found in the castle park of Fürstlich Drehna, invited you to a picnic.

The department store family must have spent wonderful summers here. But when the systematic persecution of Jews by Hitler's Germany began, the lightheartedness in Sassleben ended. In order to protect his wife, a non-Jewish woman, from repression, Georg divorces and bequeaths the castle to his wife in order to keep it out of the reach of the Nazis. His style-defining department store is “Aryanized” and he is forced out. In 1939 he died of pneumonia in Berlin, alone and without any assets, and the castle burned down in 1945 for unknown reasons. Today there are only a few stables and barns left on site, and the listed castle park only shows weathered traces of its former glory.
