Born in Olera, a hamlet of Alzano Lombardo in 1563, Tommaso Acerbis was known as the "begging friar", an activity to which he devoted himself with zeal in many parishes of what was then the Republic of Venice.

Born of a peasant family, Tommaso worked as a shepherd as a child, without receiving any education. At the age of seventeen, he entered Verona as a lay brother with the Capuchins, where he was taught to read and write, and where he was entrusted with the task of begging, in the city and surroundings.

During his life, he spent his life on the foundation of convents and monasteries, thanks to his fame as a preacher he reached the court of the Dukes of Bavaria and Emperor Ferdinand II of Habsburg, of which he became spiritual adviser, without however ever forgetting his mission in contact with the people.
