At the end of the 15th century, the brothers Ernst and Albrecht von Sachsen had an artificial pond built near Torgau by decree from the Electorate of Saxony. It should be used for fish farming and thus supply the farm. During the fortress period, the Great Pond also served as a water reservoir for filling the moats. Today it is a dam and flood protection system and at the same time an important nature reserve and local recreation area. The Great Pond is still used for fish farming. Then as now, the dam is filled with water from the Black Graben. The system also dams the Zinna flood (Red Ford). The Great Pond has an average depth of 1.34 meters and covers an area of 175 hectares. The barrier structure is a five meter high earthen dam.
