The Hijkerveld is one of the largest heathlands in Drenthe and is located near Hijken. Large parts were used as residential areas until the Iron Age. The Iron Age farmers used small walled arable fields called Celtic fields. Remains of these prehistoric fields lie on the heath. Burial mounds and old cart tracks also point to earlier habitation. Scattered across this moorland are approximately fifteen burial mounds that have given archaeologists a unique picture of more than 4,000 years of almost continuous human presence in the area.
