Hiking

The Hijkerveld is one of the largest heathlands in Drenthe and is located near Hijken. Large parts were used as residential areas until the Iron Age. The Iron Age farmers used small walled arable fields called Celtic fields. Remains of these prehistoric fields lie on the heath. Burial mounds and old cart tracks also point to earlier habitation. For centuries the area was only used for grazing. A traditional use that has been restored by Het Drentse Landschap. drentslandschap.nl/natuurgebied/hijkerveld

Hiking

Scattered across this moorland are approximately fifteen burial mounds that have given archaeologists a unique picture of more than 4,000 years of almost continuous human presence in the area. The hills date back to the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. In addition to all kinds of pottery, there are stone hammers, bronze needles, arrowheads and even a pair of gold jewellery
found it.
