Near the castle ruins of Stein lies the cemetery of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. A total of 159 religious, including Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, are buried here. The priests and brothers have lived in the mission house on the castle grounds since 1921. Around 1970, sisters also came to live there and the monastery complex became a retirement home for brothers, priests and sisters. Fathers who returned from the mission were also able to spend their old age in Stein.

In 1993, the last religious were buried in the cemetery. In 2000, the castle park including the monastery cemetery was transferred to the municipality of Stein.

      Regional Museum Elsloo.

The war ended in South Limburg in September 1944, but that is not yet the case in the northern provinces and certainly not in the overseas territories. That is why we must not forget in Steinse the fathers, brothers and sisters, who are buried in the monastery cemetery of Stein and who also fell victim to the violence of war. They too deserve to be mentioned in this period of commemoration.
