When the building was inaugurated, it was outfitted with a city council chamber, courtrooms and quarters for the inmates, which had six detention chambers for the city's sinners.
The house was used as the town hall until 1968, after which it served as a courthouse and police station. The police left the building in 2010 and Syddjurs Municipality took over the building.
Today the courthouse is run by Ebeltoft Kunstforening, ie. of voluntary and unpaid citizens.
