After the town fire of October 4, 1838 destroyed the town hall, which dates back to 1525, the town council decided to build a new one. The old town hall was located on the east side of the market with only the gable. For the new building, the town council acquired the burned-out sites of houses no. 71, 72 and 73 on the north side of the market. These were the former houses of the nailsmith Markert, the master baker Paust and the former mayor Lucas.
