"The Niers is a river in the Lower Rhine region that runs parallel to the Maas and Rhine on the eastern side of the German-Dutch border. The banks of the Niers are a popular local recreation area, and the river itself offers numerous opportunities for water sports and nature-based paddling tours.

In Goch, it turns west to flow into the Maas near Gennep (Netherlands).

The source area of the Niers is in Kuckum, the eastern area of the city of Erkelenz.

The Niers used to have several sources, the main sources being at Zourshof in Kuckum and at the "Klocken Sprung" in Keyenberg. The Niers also receives inflow from various small watercourses (drainage ditches), such as the Köhm from the direction of Borschemich, which flows into the Niers in Keyenberg. Water also flowed into the Köhm from the ditch system of Haus Keyenberg, which in turn was fed by springs.

From Kuckum, the Niers flows through Wanlo, Wickrathberg, Wickrath, Odenkirchen, Rheydt, Mönchengladbach, Neersen, Viersen, Süchteln, Grefrath, Wachtendonk, Straelen, Pont, Geldern, Veert, Wetten, Kevelaer, past Wissen Castle, further through Weeze and Goch."
