The Söder Tor, which stands directly next to the graduation tower, is a historic city gate in the Sooden district and a landmark of the spa town. It was built in 1704/05 and was the only access to the landgrave's saltworks. A strict gatekeeper checked everyone here so that no one could transport salt out without paying the required duty in advance. Despite the controls, customs regulations were obviously repeatedly circumvented. That's why the gate also served as a prison. All of this is explained in detail today in the neighboring salt museum.

The Söder Gate dates from 1704/05. A long fence around the saltworks with the only exit “Söder Tor” was intended to ensure that no salt was stolen or left the saltworks without paying customs duties. The revenue was too important for the sovereigns.

An absolute highlight in Bad Sooden. When you go for a walk it's actually always "on the way". By the way, the entrance to the Salt Museum is also located there🚶the second highlight of many in Bad Sooden-Allendorf🌞

No vehicle or pound of salt was allowed to leave Sooden except through the Söder Gate. Connected by a high fence until the 19th century, the Baroque gatehouse, built in 1704/05, provided access to the Landgrave's saltworks.

The striking Baroque building was constructed in 1704/05 during the reign of Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kassel. Accordingly, the coats of arms of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel and the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia are prominently displayed next to the gate. The latter is named after Karl's wife, Amalia, a princess of Courland and Semigallia by birth.

Since 1974, the building has housed the Salt Museum, whose exhibition on the history of salt production and saltworks has been open to the public since 1979.
