    Tips

The tax and salt office was located in the Pfennigstube. Here the export duties for the salt produced from brine in Sooden were paid before passing the Söder Gate. It cost two pfennigs per eighth of salt (around 155 pounds). As a result, the name Pfennigstube has become established. Equipped with the salt pass, the carters could then sell the salt in the county and also abroad. On the way back they often brought wine from the Rhine-Main region with them, which is why part of the road leading around the former saltworks and today's spa gardens is also known as the wine row.

The Pfennigstube is a Renaissance substructure with an attached half-timbered floor. Here the salt carters had to pay their toll at the exit of the saltworks: 2 pfennigs per eighth of salt loaded (around 155 pounds). This is how the name “Pfennigstube” came about.

In front of the building there is an old court table with scales, also known as the salt table.
