During the night of the floods between July 14th and 15th, 2021, the rivers Kyll and Urft burst their banks in such a way that significant parts of the Eifel route were damaged or destroyed. This resulted in flooding of railway facilities, landslides and embankments as well as undermining of the tracks, which led to the damage or destruction of tracks, stations and other infrastructure. In Gerolstein, Philippsheim and Kordel, railcars were also stuck in the floods. The train service between Hürth-Kalscheuren and Trier-Ehrang had since stopped.
