Founded on a hill, the name of the village probably derives from a castle that has now disappeared, the so-called "Castel d'Agnola". Surrounded by the Apuan Alps and the ridge of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the town offers an enchanting view that reaches as far as Lake Gramolazzo, located at the foot of the hill. Castagnola was originally owned by the Lucchesi, attracted by its favorable position. Interesting is the Romanesque church of Santi Simone e Giuda, built in the 13th century, with a stone baptismal font inside.
