The St. Vitus Church in Alterode draws the attention of visitors with its rather peculiar construction. The baroque stone construction of the nave, the transverse tower with a half-timbered top and the presumably Romanesque tower base are components that point to an interesting history. The church is said to have been dedicated to Saint Vitus (Sanct Vitus) by missionaries from the monastery of Corvey. The missionary work started in the period from about 950 to 960 from the Gröningen monastery near Halberstadt.
