The earliest mention of Hoogcruts Abbey is from 1686, referring to a Mass held there in 1428 in "de Capelle van het Heylich Cruyts, d'welck tegenwoordigh is het Clooster". According to tradition, the monastery was miraculously formed when a shepherd saw a cross among the thorn bushes. This sight was so impressive that even the sheep fell to their knees. Local residents decided to build a chapel to commemorate these events.
The chapel was converted into a monastery according to a document dated March 24, 1496.
On September 6, 1979, after the Paulus Foundation had moved out, the building was again destroyed by fire. The then owner was suspected of arson. Ultimately, this could not be proven and the insurance company had to compensate him. However, the money is not used for necessary repairs and the complex has since fallen into disrepair. Many precious materials and ornaments have disappeared in the last 35 years. The dilapidated site was closed due to the risk of collapse. In the summer of 2011, the Limburgs Landschap Foundation bought the ruins and started cleaning up the rubble. The aim is to consolidate the ruins and open the park and the building to the public.
