A very special historical place in Alkmaar is the Hofje van Paling en Van Foreest, or actually the Provenhuis Paling en Van Foreest. It was built in 1540 by order of Pieter Claez Paling and his wife Josina van Foreest, making it Alkmaar's oldest hofje.
