This pillar was erected by the heirs of a knight who miraculously returned from the crusades, who told the story of his vain youthful love. From this story was born the legend of the Blessed Lucia da Settefonti, or Lucia Chiari, who was a nun and then abbess of a convent that stood on the ridge, shortly after 1100.

Lucia became abbess upon the death of Matilde di Canossa, founder of the convent, but the fame of her beauty reached the surrounding area and the rumor also reached the many garrisons that garrisoned the territory of Uggiano. Among the soldiers there was a noble knight, Diotagora Fava, who was secretly in love with her, having seen her in a church in Bologna, when she had not yet taken her vows.

The handsome knight rode along the path over the gullies every morning to go to the convent church, but without daring to say anything. Lucia had noticed this constant presence and soon found herself fighting the disturbance with assiduous prayers, vigils and penances which soon undermined her health. She fell ill, and then he opened his heart and Lucia did too: she told him that she loved him, but that she was resolute in her dedication to monastic life and invited him never to return. They broke up, with the knight's promise to leave as a crusader for the Holy Land. So he did, while Lucia, undermined by illness, passed away in a saintly way.

The knight was wounded, taken prisoner and locked in a cell where one night, in the throes of fever, he saw Lucia holding out her hand to him and, as if in a dream, he found himself transported to the forest of Settefonti. Having awakened, he walked towards the convent, knelt in front of his beloved's tomb and cried. At that moment the seven sources of crystalline water, which had dried up following Lucia's death, began gushing profusely again.
