Elafonisi is a small island off the west coast of Crete. A sandy promontory to the island forms a shallow water lagoon that is in no way inferior to many South Sea beaches. The pink to pink-colored sand created by mussel shells merges seamlessly into the turquoise-blue sea and creates a truly paradisiacal ambience. In the area in front of the beach there are parking lots, snack bars, showers and umbrellas.

A lot has changed since our last visit in 2013 - all for the worse. The impressive pink deposits are at most 10% of what they were in 2013, but there are 10 times more people there. This beach is also going the way of all tourists - hotspots, Instagram followers on every corner, mass operations and rip-offs - a shame, but probably nothing can be done about it.
